As our communities respond and persevere amidst COVID-19, health crises, and financial implications of missing or losing work, we also enter the eve of Ramadan. This time reminds us of the importance of zakat, the Islamic mutual aid practice around redistribution of wealth. Further, marginalized communities are experiencing compounded barriers to support, lack of access to resources, and precarity in job security. The social safety net in this country is inadequate to support actual needs, and communities have been structurally excluded from having access to resources. With the impact of historical and current imperialism, surveillance, and criminalization, Muslim communities are also marginalized and in need of support. In light of all of these things, Queer Crescent and Masjid al-Rabia have come together and built the Radical Muslim Mutual Aid as an effort to provide some support to Muslims during this time.
We define Muslim as anyone who identifies with muslimness in some way - cultural, political, spiritual, revert, etc. We seek to dismantle traditional ideas and norms of what it means to be Muslim while intentionally supporting our communities.
We will be prioritizing folks who are disabled, low-income, transgender, queer, undocumented, formerly incarcerated, survivors of domestic and sexual violence, those who financially support others, and/or have had their income impacted due to loss of work as a result of COVID-19.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Distribution amounts are dependent on community donations received. We will not be determining the need of applicants - each application will receive a contribution, and we hope to offer additional funds to those who identify with prioritized communities.
Disbursement / funds will be issued within 7-10 days after application is approved — if you need the money more urgently let us know and we may be able to help you on a case-by-case basis.
We hope for a world where communities can be healthy and thrive, free of war, occupation, financial precarity, the prison and immigration detention systems, and lack of access to resources. As we work toward this goal, we want to give this small offering to support our communities along the way.
This initiative is a collaboration between Queer Crescent and Masjid al-Rabia. Founded in 2017, Queer Crescent is a healing justice organization centered on community, safety, and healing arts for LGBTQIA+ Muslims in the Bay Area and beyond. Our programs focus on building resilience, emerging leadership, connecting to spiritual practices and reclaiming our dignity, place and power within community. Masjid al-Rabia is a Muslim community center in Chicago, IL where everyone is welcome. Through Education, Advocacy and Outreach we empower leadership from within our communities and strive to foster in an Islam that truly leaves no one behind.
The structure and intention of this fundraiser benefited greatly from the model set by the COVID-19 Mutual Aid Fund for LGBTQI+ BIPOC Folks and the Seattle Artists Relief Fund. Thank you for your work.
